Will Gunther Return to WWE at Wrestlepalooza? (Is “The Ring General” the Opponent for Cena’s Final Match?)
The former WWE Champion Gunther is currently out of action, which has led to speculation about his appearance in the upcoming PLE, Clash in Paris, or most probably at Wrestlepalooza.
At SummerSlam 2025, The Ring General lost his WWE Title to CM Punk, which was later taken by Seth “Freakin” Rollins, who cashed in his MITB briefcase.
On the Raw episode following SummerSlam, Michael Cole made an on-air announcement stating that Gunther had sustained a septal hematoma and an orbital blowout fracture during his match at SummerSlam Night One.
Since SummerSlam, Gunther has been out of action and was said to have undergone nose surgery in early August as a result of the match.
It’s been nearly a month since The Ring General last stepped into the ring, and his title reign seems to have ended abruptly. With September approaching, there is a possibility we may see Gunther return at the upcoming PLE or even at Clash in Paris.

Written off RAW with a nose injury, Gunther is still advertised for Clash in Paris (Aug 31) and RAW France.
Surgery rumors swirl, but he may wrestle through.

While there are no official confirmations regarding Gunther’s return, fan theories suggest that he could make his comeback at the Paris event as a babyface, potentially targeting Seth Rollins, The Visionary.
Will Gunther Face John Cena? Is Gunther the Opponent for Cena’s Final Match?
John Cena’s WWE journey is coming to an end, with his final match scheduled for Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
While only the date has been officially announced, speculation is circulating regarding Cena’s final opponent. Drew McIntyre, Gunther, Brock Lesnar, and AJ Styles are a few names on this Cena final match list.

Among these, Gunther appears to be a leading contender, having recently faced and defeated WWE legend Goldberg in his final match. This has led to speculation that WWE is gradually portraying Gunther as a “Legend Killer.”
Therefore, WWE might bring back Gunther soon, most likely before Wrestlepalooza, to set up his feud with the 17-time World Champion, John Cena.
While Drew McIntyre also appears to be a strong possibility, his current rivalry with Cody Rhodes makes Gunther the more likely candidate to face Cena in his farewell match.
Moreover, the two have never faced each other in their careers, despite both expressing interest in a potential showdown.
In an interview with Radio Times, Gunther even spoke about John Cena’s legacy and shared his desire to face him in the future, saying:
“It’s great for him that he’s able to do that and say, ‘This is the way I want to finish it and the way I want to go out. It’s a great way to do it. If somebody deserves it, then it’s him. It’s good to have him back around. Obviously, I have not interacted with him or seen him much because he’s on SmackDown mostly, but who knows, there’s still a long time left, so maybe there’s a chance to get in there with him before he hangs it up.”
Whether John Cena and Gunther will face each other in the future remains a mystery. Still, it would be exciting to see The Ring General retiring the WWE legend John Cena, just as he did with Goldberg, which could create a new streak of retirement-match victories for Gunther.
